The Second CoastLab Course is an event promoted by CoastLab Network, the network for small and medium coastal engineering laboratories, with the support of ENCORA Young Professional Exchange Program (YPEP).

This course is designed as a hands-on application-oriented training. It will provide the students with the knowledge necessary to set up a sediment transport simulation in physical model. As far as possible, students will also learn to use laboratory instrumentation.

The three day course on the application of physical modelling to port and coastal protection covers the following:

• Learn to model several types of movable-bed models;
• Overview of model set-up, calibration and validation procedures as well as wave-structure interactions;
• Get an introduction to instrumentation and measurement of the different parameters describing a given phenomena;
• Issues to consider when analysing data, overview of theoretical background, plus practical advice.

Who should attend the course?

Young professionals interested in the application of physical modelling to port and coastal protection. The scientific level will range from Master to PhD. Applicants are expected to understand and speak English, the course language.

The course will be held from April 9 through 11, 2008 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Porto - Portugal.

FEUP is located in the new University Campus, only 15 minutes drive from Porto International Airport and 10 minutes from the city centre. It is easily accessible by public, both by metro and by bus, and private transportation.
