ENCORA Workshop on The Wadden Sea Environments – bridging the gap between science, practice & policy Klappholttal / Sylt, Germany 29. – 31. October 2007 The workshop aims to bridge the gap between decision making, science & practice. The topics of the workshop will be coastal protection and restoration measures against the background of climate change and its consequences in the Wadden Sea environment, with a focus on the planning perspective (20-30 years) while keeping in mind the expected long term development (100 years).
Background ENCORA (www.encora.eu) is a project sponsored by the EU that aims to bring together coastal science, policy and practice. The German and Dutch Encora networks have jointly taken the initiative to organize this workshop that will bring together key persons from the three target groups of coastal policy, science and practice. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (IKZM) in the Wadden Sea area requires balancing: policies and science mostly abound, but practical implementation often is lagging behind. We aim at reaching a common vision on how to implement in practice sustainable coastal protection in the entire Wadden Sea area – considering local, regional and national differences. The product aimed by the workshop are recommendations for the practical implementation of the currently available policies and scientific results with respect to coastal protection and restoration. The ENCORA community intends to publish the results of the workshop in the Coastal Wiki (http://www.encora.eu/coastalwiki/Main_Page), and will communicate the recommendations to the European Commission via the instrument of the European Action Plans. Who should attend? Representatives from all three target groups (coastal policy, science and practice) from countries around the wadden sea area are encouraged to attend the workshop. In addition, we have reserved a limited number of places for young professionals (YPs) who can apply for attendance within the frame of the Young Professional Exchange Program of Encora (http://www.encora.eu/ypep.php). The total attendance will be limited to approximately 40 persons. Meeting venue The venue of the workshop is at the education center in Klappholttal located between Kampen and List in the northern part of the Island of Sylt, Germany (http://www.akademie-am-meer.de/; website in German only). Accommodation is simple but comfortable in cottages that are spread around the dunes of the 7,5 ha large area. Please, note that most of the cottages have no bathrooms, there are separate bath houses (similar to a camping ground). The fee is 52,- Euro per person and night. In this price included are accommodation in double bed rooms (9,- Euro extra for a single room), full board and drinks (vegetarian meals optional), and the conference room with beamer.
